A Matter of Ribbon and Quill
The candle burned low, and Isolde Marchand knew a forgery when she saw one.
She sat at the writing desk in the Queen's library, the palace silent around her save for the distant tick of the long-case clock in the east hall. Before her lay a sheaf of diplomatic correspondence—treaties, renewals, humble petitions from border lords who did not yet know that the Queen had already ordered their petitions denied. Isolde's task, as the junior archivist of Elendale's human court, was to copy each letter into the Queen's register by dawn. She had done this work for three years. She had outlasted two war ministers, one chancellor, and the brief tenure of a cousin who thought court life a novelty until, six months in, he had swallowed a vial of nightroot and left his rooms through a window. Isolde did not swallow vials. Isolde copied.
Tonight the third letter in the pile had stopped her pen.
It was signed Ilene Marchand, Countess of the Western Marches. It bore the wax seal of House Marchand pressed deep and straight. It used the words her mother had used at the supper table since Isolde was six years old: the dignity of our lineage, the sober counsel of our line, the cold peace of a country long taught to kneel. The hand was her mother's. The paper was her mother's. The ink, even, was the dark iron-gall her mother had made her blend as a child, standing on a stool at the stillroom bench until her arms ached.
It was not her mother's letter.
Isolde laid her pen down very carefully. She did not yet know how she knew. It was the way one knew a beloved voice in a crowded room, or an impostor wearing a dead man's coat. She drew the page closer to the candle. She bent until the light found every down-stroke, every crossing, every curlicued capital.
There.
The letter H in Her Majesty.
Her mother, as long as Isolde had known her, had written the capital H with a tiny flourish at the bottom of the left upright—an inkblot shaped like a grain of barley, the residue of an old tutor's tyranny. Her mother had tried for thirty years to unlearn it. She had not succeeded. Every H in every letter the Countess had ever written bore that small barley seed.
This H did not.
Isolde sat still. Outside the library, a guard's boots struck the stone of the corridor and receded.
If this letter was forged, then the petition it carried was forged. If the petition was forged, then the revolt it forecast was a lie. If the revolt was a lie, then the muster the Queen had ordered along the Western Marches in answer to it was a lie too. And behind every lie stood a hand that wanted the lie believed—a hand that wanted a thousand mustered soldiers moved from the eastern border, where the elves had begun to send strange word, to the western one, where only her mother lived.
Isolde pressed her knuckles against her mouth.
She was twenty-three years old. She was a third daughter of a middle-rank house. She had no allies at court who were not also allies of whoever had paid for this forgery. She had one friend: Cordelia Grayson, who was at present in her brother's country estate grieving a disappearance Isolde did not yet fully understand. She had one person who had never laughed at her, in four years of palace evenings. She had, in short, Ronan.
That was not enough. It would have to be enough.
She rose from the desk, folded the forged letter into the inner pocket of her gown, sealed the Queen's register with its unfinished page at the foot of its stand, blew out the candle, and went to find the captain of the Queen's night watch.
The palace of Elendale kept two faces. By day it wore a mask of cold gilding—long galleries of polished marble, tapestries stiff with age, bronze busts of dead queens staring down at their unworthy descendants. By night it softened. The tapestries grew velveted in shadow. The lamps in their iron sconces flickered the old scenes into motion. A dog barked once in the kennels and a hundred pages of rose-scented paper lay quiet in a hundred quiet rooms. If one listened, one could hear the palace breathing.
Isolde had learned the night palace very well. She walked it now in slippers she had cushioned with wool so her steps made no sound. She took the servants' stair down to the courtyard level. She crossed the Lantern Walk, where twelve hooded flames made twelve puddles of gold on the flagstones, and slipped in at the side door of the officers' house.
Ronan Drake kept rooms on the second floor. He was not there.
Isolde, who had known where he kept his rooms for three years and had never once entered them, did not waste time being relieved. She turned back and climbed to the parapet.
He was where he always was at the turning of the watch—standing at the north wall, looking out across the city to the black cap of Shadowpeak beyond, as if the mountain and he were in some quiet argument neither wished to win.
He turned before she reached him. He always turned before anyone reached him. She had decided, long ago, that it was not witchcraft but the discipline of a man who had come up through the common regiments; he had learned young that a soldier who missed footsteps in the dark was a soldier who did not see another morning. He was, at thirty-two, the youngest captain the Queen's Guard had ever known, and the first to come from any house poorer than a stone one. He was tall. His hair had been fair once and was now a kind of iron. His eyes were grey in the day and, in lamp-light, almost blue.
"Lady Marchand," he said.
He always called her Lady Marchand on the parapet and Isolde in the archive, and she had never told him she had noticed.
"Captain," she said. "I have a matter."
He was very good at his face. He did not move it. "What sort of matter?"
"A matter of ribbon and quill," she said, which was the old court phrase for a question of penmanship, the sort of thing a clerk's clerk settled in an afternoon.
His jaw did not move, but something did, somewhere behind the bone. He had read her, she thought, as a hawk reads the track of a mouse in the grass. He had always read her too well.
"Not here," he said.
"No."
"The west archive has been unused since Thursday. The housekeeper's keys are on my belt."
"I know," she said, and did not say because I watched you take them when you left the housekeeper's room last night, Ronan, because I have watched you for three years and never once let myself see what I was watching.
"Go," he said. "I will follow in six minutes."
He followed in six.
The west archive was cold. It smelled of old vellum and iron, of cedar chips used against moth, of beeswax. A single narrow window gave on the garden; the moon, halving itself, lay a pale stripe along the tile. Isolde set the forged letter in the stripe of moonlight as if it were a body she had brought in from the snow.
Ronan shut the door behind him and turned the key and said nothing. He read for longer than she thought he needed to. She watched his hands while he read.
His hands were not the hands of a court-bred man. They were long-fingered and scarred across the knuckles, and one nail on the left had grown back crooked after some old break, and she had, long ago, given up pretending she did not know exactly where the crooked nail sat in the line.
"This is Ilene Marchand's paper," he said. "This is her seal. This is her ink."
"Yes."
"And it is not her letter."
"No," said Isolde, and her breath caught very quietly on the word, the way a cloak catches on a nail in the dark.
He looked up. "How do you know?"
"The H in Her Majesty. She has a barley-seed blot at the base of the upright. All her life. I can show you in twenty letters in my apartment if you need me to prove it."
He did not ask her to prove it. He laid the letter back down on the tile of moonlight. He said, "Who."
Isolde had not said the name out loud since she had understood. Saying it in this cold archive, to this man, felt like opening a door in her own chest and letting the wind through.
"Lord Ambrose Vane, Master of the Western Muster," she said. "He sat at dinner beside my mother six weeks ago. He has been to our estate on three visits in the last year. He took tea with her in the stillroom, alone, on at least one of them. He would know the ink. He would know the seal. He would not know the barley seed, because my mother is a proud woman and does not show that blot to men she wants to impress. And he stands to gain the muster if it moves west." She paused. "He is also the cousin of the Queen's chancellor, and the chancellor has not slept in the palace for three days, and the Queen is preparing, at dawn, to sign an order sending fourteen hundred soldiers on a six-week march away from the eastern border, where an elf knelt on her stones last month and begged her to believe that the night-things had begun to wake."
Ronan was very still.
He said, at last, "If you are right, and we speak—if we speak too soon—they will hang you for sedition before the morning is out. Your mother will not be able to save you. Your mother may not want to save you. And I—" He did not finish.
"You will have to bring them to me," she said.
"I will have to bring them to you."
The moon moved a fraction. The archive breathed.
"Ronan," she said.
He looked up.
"When we are done with this," she said, "whatever this is—whatever comes of it, whether I am hanged or made rich or sent back to my mother in disgrace or kept on as archivist or killed in my bed tomorrow night by a man in Ambrose Vane's pay—when we are done, I have something to say to you."
"You have something to say to me now," he said, which was not a question.
"Yes," she said. "But I am not a coward, and I will not say it to a dead man, and I will not say it to a man who might become dead in the next four hours because I asked him to. So you will stay alive, Captain, and I will stay alive, and when we are done, I will say it."
Something moved in his face.
"Stay alive," he said.
"Yes."
"Agreed."
He bent, folded the letter again, tucked it into the breast of his coat, and held out his hand.
She put hers in it. His fingers closed around hers and held for perhaps the space of four heartbeats, which in the dim of the archive was a very long time.
"Go and wake the Lord Seneschal," he said. "Tell him the captain of the Queen's Guard begs audience before the signing. I will bring the evidence. Do not go anywhere alone between here and there. If a man offers you an errand, refuse it. If a man offers you a cup, refuse it. If a man steps between you and the door, scream."
"I do not scream."
"Learn," he said, and kissed her knuckles—once, quickly, as if he had surprised himself—and let her go.
The signing was set for the gold chamber at an hour past dawn.
The gold chamber of Elendale was not the grandest in the palace. The throne room was grander, and the great gallery grander still. But the gold chamber was where treaties were ratified, and it had been where treaties had been ratified since a century before the Grayson line took its name. The walls were paneled in old gilt. The ceiling was painted with a map of the kingdom as it had looked three queens ago. The Queen's great chair of state stood on a dais of three steps. The chancellor's writing stand, with its quill and blotter and ribbon of office, stood at the foot of the dais to the right.
Lord Ambrose Vane, Master of the Western Muster, stood at the writing stand when Isolde entered, with the ribbon of office held across both palms like an offering. He was a narrow man, fair-haired, with a small neat beard and eyes the color of a shallow pond. He had smiled at Isolde at supper six weeks ago. She remembered the smile very well now. She remembered, also, that he had not once asked after her mother's health and had, instead, asked very particular questions about the stillroom.
The Queen had not yet entered. The great chair was empty. The chancellor stood just behind the writing stand, a stooped old man in a dark robe, who was, she now knew, very likely about to be arrested by nightfall, though he did not yet know it, and who, in the meantime, was about to hand his cousin a quill and a kingdom.
Isolde took her place at the archivist's lectern along the side wall. Her register—the one whose page she had not finished last night—was already laid open on the lectern, and the unfinished page, which should have carried this morning's letter in her own careful hand, stared up at her like a wound.
She had not finished it.
She had written, instead, across the whole of it, in her clearest copperplate and in the iron-gall ink she had brought from her mother's stillroom at twelve years old, the following:
Be it remembered, in this place and on this day, that the letter delivered to the Queen's register of the third of this month, purporting to bear the seal and hand of Ilene, Countess of the Western Marches, is a forgery; that the hand is not hers; that the seal, while hers, has been applied after the writing, not before; that the ink, while hers, has been mixed at a different stillroom and in a different season; and that the hand that forged it is known to this archivist and is in this room at this hour. Signed, Isolde Marchand, junior archivist, Elendale.
She closed the register. She did not lock it. She set her hand flat upon it and waited.
The herald's staff struck the floor.
"Her Majesty the Queen."
The Queen entered from the side door, gowned in the winter velvet of state, and the gold chamber rose and bent and settled. She climbed her three steps and sat and lifted her hand, and Ambrose Vane came forward with the ribbon of office, and the chancellor came forward with the quill.
Before they could reach her, Captain Ronan Drake entered the chamber from the main door, alone and uninvited, and went down on one knee before the dais.
"Your Majesty," he said.
A silence fell that Isolde would remember for the rest of her life. It was the silence of a very large and ornate room realizing, all at once, that it was about to have an opinion.
"Captain Drake," the Queen said, "you are not on this watch, and you are not expected."
"No, Your Majesty."
"Then you will state your business, and you will state it briefly."
"Your Majesty," said Ronan, "I bring evidence of a forgery in the papers presented to Your Majesty for signing this morning. I beg a hearing of not more than ten minutes."
The chancellor's face emptied of its blood so fast that Isolde, from her lectern, actually saw it happen. Ambrose Vane's did not. Ambrose Vane's face went, instead, into a careful and practiced puzzlement—a man who had been doing this for many years and had been doing it, Isolde now understood, in rooms much harder than this one.
"By whose authority," said Ambrose Vane, smoothly, "does a captain of the Queen's Guard interrupt the signing of a muster?"
"By mine," said the Queen, without looking at him. She was looking at Ronan. "Captain. The evidence."
Ronan rose, crossed the tile to Isolde's lectern, and laid the forged letter upon it, beside her register. She opened the register. She turned it, so that the page she had written in the night faced the room, and she stepped back from the lectern so that no one could later say the captain had touched her hand to the page.
"The forged letter is here, Your Majesty," said Ronan. "The archivist's attestation is here. The archivist is here. She will speak, at Your Majesty's pleasure, to the tell-tale she has found and to the cousin of the chancellor who stood in her mother's stillroom six weeks ago."
Ambrose Vane moved.
It was a very small movement. It was the movement of a man whose hand, in the fold of his tunic, had begun, very quietly, the long journey toward the knife at his belt.
Ronan's sword was out before the hand had made half an inch.
"Do not," Ronan said, very calmly.
The hand stopped.
"Lord Vane," said the Queen, in a voice like slow water, "you will stand away from the chancellor's stand. Captain, you will remain. Chancellor, you will sit in the blue chair by the window and you will not speak until I address you. Archivist."
Isolde curtseyed.
"Approach."
She approached.
"You have written in my register this night."
"I have, Your Majesty."
"You understand what you have written."
"I do, Your Majesty."
"And you understand that if you are in error, even by the small matter of a blot at the foot of a letter, you will not remain my archivist, and you will likely not remain alive."
"I do, Your Majesty."
"And you have written it anyway."
"I have, Your Majesty."
The Queen looked at her for a long moment. She was, Isolde thought, perhaps the only woman alive who could look at another woman long enough to see her entire life and its end and still not change her expression. The Queen had been at court since she was nine.
"Read me your attestation," the Queen said, "and then take down my orders."
Isolde read it. Her voice did not shake. She had been trained, by long service, to read aloud in the voice of a person who was reporting weather.
The Queen's orders followed. They were brief. A ride sent to the Western Marches at speed, to ascertain the state of affairs and the Countess Marchand's continued liberty. A cordon set about Lord Vane and the chancellor and three named members of the chancellor's household. A suspension, pending review, of the western muster. A summons at dusk to two of the eastern lords who had, in fact, been sending unusual word, and to the elven envoy who had come two months before and been refused.
When she was done, she laid her hand on the register, closed it, and said, "The archivist has our thanks. The archivist will not leave the palace until we say so. The captain has our thanks. The captain will not leave the palace until we say so. That, for the present, is all."
She stood. The room stood with her. She descended her three steps and, passing Isolde's lectern, paused.
"Child," the Queen said, quietly. "Your mother will be well, or I shall know the reason."
"Thank you, Your Majesty."
"And you," the Queen said to Ronan, so low that only the three of them could hear, "have never been the fool the court thinks you, Captain, and I have never thought it. Try not to break her."
"I shall not, Your Majesty," said Ronan.
The Queen went.
It was near evening before they were let alone.
The west archive was cold still. The window showed a different moon than it had shown the night before—a thinner one, tilted. Isolde had not slept. Ronan had not slept. They stood on either side of the narrow window and did not yet sit.
"You said," Ronan said, "that when we were done, you had something to say to me."
"I did."
"We are not done," he said. "Vane will speak. The chancellor will speak. There will be a trial. There will be the matter of the eastern lords. There will be the matter of the elven envoy."
"I know."
"But we are alive."
"Yes."
He waited.
Isolde looked at him. At the iron of his hair, and the crooked nail of his left hand, and the small fresh scar at his jaw where a shaving razor had slipped this morning in a hurry, and the way his shoulders set, even now, as if at any moment the door might come in and he would have to put her behind him.
"I have loved you," she said, "for three years. I have not said it because I am a middle-rank third daughter and you are a commoner captain, and the court would have laughed at both of us, and my mother would have withdrawn her blessing from my service, and the Queen's Guard would have wondered whether its captain could be trusted to draw a sword for a lady he drew a breath for. I have not said it because I was a coward, and because I was waiting for a moment that justified the saying, which was a cowardice of a worse kind, because the moment was never going to come. It only came last night because a forger was greedier than he was careful. I do not want to wait for another forger. I do not want another moment. I do not want to be a woman who says the thing only when there is a sword between her and the door."
He did not move for a long beat. Then he crossed the narrow window and, very slowly, took her face in his scarred hands.
"I have loved you," he said, "for four."
She laughed, because she had not expected that, and the laugh surprised the tears out of her at the same moment, and he kissed the tears and then he kissed her mouth, and she found that his mouth tasted, faintly, of iron and of the bitter palace tea, and of something warm and entirely his own.
When they broke apart he kept his forehead against hers.
"The Queen will not unmake me for this," he said.
"No."
"Your mother may."
"She will not. She knows forgers when she meets them. She will also know, by the end of this week, that her daughter has saved her life. She will not unmake me either."
"The court will laugh."
"Let it," said Isolde. "I am very tired of the court. I think I should like to be, for a little while, a woman who is in love, and who has done a true thing, and who is not being laughed at because she has the sense to be deaf."
He laughed, then—a real, low laugh, such as she had not heard from him in four years of parapets.
Outside the narrow window, the palace of Elendale went on breathing. Beyond it, the city. Beyond the city, in the dark to the east, the mountains where an elven envoy had knelt and begged, and would be heard at dusk tomorrow, and would—though neither Ronan nor Isolde yet knew the word for what was coming—begin, in six quiet months, the first small stirring of an age that would one day be called the Fractured Dynasty.
But that was a longer story, and it was not theirs.
For tonight, there was only the archive, and the moon on the tile, and the captain who had turned before she reached him, and the archivist who had known a forgery when she saw one, and the matter, now properly and entirely settled, of ribbon and quill.
